High-quality programs intentionally train and prepare their staff to positively guide student behavior. In high quality programs, staff continually monitor student behavior and are able to quickly gain youth’s cooperation when needed. Staff consistently use a neutral or positive tone of voice, and treat youth respectfully. When student misbehavior occurs, staff calmly employ simple reminders to redirect behavior. Staff do their best to avoid “loss of privileges” consequences; instead, opting to pull students aside to discuss misbehavior privately. This approach ensures the program climate is supportive and staff-student interactions are always positive.
