Staff and teachers are a core component of successful, high quality programs. Training and preparing these staff members to work well with each other and students is critical to meeting program objectives. In high quality programs, staff-student interactions are positive and respectful, and staff engage in friendly verbal exchanges with youth. This exemplifies staff showing interest in youth as individuals, and proactively building relationships. Staff apply rules fairly and consistently, and intervene when students cannot resolve problems on their own. Infusing these practices into staff training before program start can help ensure success.
