When a young person has regular opportunities for leadership, he or she becomes internally motivated to achieve a goal and is able to direct effort over time towards accomplishing it. High quality programs offer multiple and frequent chances for students to help plan and lead activities for the program. Moreover, providing young people opportunities to make decisions or rules help ensure that their opinions are heard and that there is student buy-in throughout the program.
