Programs that have an explicit focus on academic outcomes provide students with opportunities to engage in content areas such as ELA, math, and science. High quality programs provide an intentional forum for students to work on coursework – whether it’s assignments from school or a staff/teacher-led academic lesson. Programs focus on grade-level content, and also on increasing students’ engagement in learning so youth develop a sense of inquiry and exploration. These efforts are designed to help students recognize their own achievements and growth, and carry learning into the traditional school day.
