The interactions between and among staff and students contribute to the overall program climate, and shape the socio-emotional environment. In high quality programs, staff-student and staff-to-staff interactions are positive, respectful, and cooperative. Youth are kind and respectful to each other, as well. Staff apply rules fairly and consistently, and create an environment where youth are able to problem solve on their own when minor issues occur. Staff intervene when problems escalate beyond students’ capacity to solve them on their own. These supportive relationships among staff and students shape the success of programs.
