Communicating Data Workshop – March 20, 2017
On March 20, Boston After School & Beyond hosted a workshop to discuss how to translate data into compelling messages for different audiences. The event featured actionable tips for effective communication, coupled with interactive activities and opportunities for peer-to-peer learning.
Partnership Breakfast – March 17, 2017
On May 17, Boston After School & Beyond held a Partnership Breakfast to continue expanding our network. Boston After School & Beyond our approach to closing the opportunity gap and explained the variety of ways in which partner programs can get involved including innovative initiatives, program measurement, and professional development. Workshop on Maximizing Attendance in Summer – January 27, 2017
On January 27, summer program leaders met to explore best practices to increase student attendance. Three programs with historically high attendance rates, Achieve, Camp Harborview, and Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, shared their proven strategies and facilitated break-out groups for attendees to discuss methods for improving attendance at different grade levels.
Advancing Quality Partnerships Winter Summit – January 17, 2017
At this event, BASB shared baseline data findings from SY16-17, offering recommendations to spur improvement for the spring semester. Then BASB launched a live demo of the Insight Center to connect data to practice, and captured feedback on how to make the platform more relevant for school-year partners. Next, BPS and BASB provided an overview of a new citywide social-emotional learning initiative, supported by the Wallace Foundation. Finally, BPS led an interactive workshop enabling attendees to dive into the district's Partnership Effectiveness Standards.
Summer Learning Seminar – November 2, 2016
A seminar which unpacked findings from the largest ever study on summer learning. Additionally, we looked at local trends based on the participation of 127 Boston summer programs.
Advancing Quality Partnerships Summer Summit – August 30, 2016
This event was hosted with BPS Office of School-Community Partnerships on August 30, 2016. BPS presented newly developed partnership quality standards and indicators, based on BASB's work, that AQP participants will use in program planning. In addition to BASB-led PD events focused on skill building and program quality, BPS will lead two sessions on Cognitively Demanding Tasks and Culturally & Linguistically Sustaining Practices for partners.
Badging Kickoff Meeting – May 15, 2016
Boston After School & Beyond hosted a kickoff meeting for the Boston Summer Learning Community middle school program sites that will implement Boston Beyond's digital badging platform in Summer 2016. Attendees learned how the badge platform works, what the criteria to earn badges is, and how the concept of badging worked in practice from program leaders who piloted the system in 2015.
PEAR Action Planning Session – April 27, 2016
Boston After School & Beyond partnered with the Program in Education, Afterschool & Resiliency (PEAR) in April 2016 to provide coaching sessions on how to create intentional action plans based on data. Attendees learned how to incorporate practical skill development strategies into program design plans, set goals and indicators of success, and facilitate action planning with their staff.
Boston Summer Learning Summit – March 18, 2016
Over 100 attendees participated in the Boston Summer Learning Summit on March 22, 2016, at District Hall (which generously sponsored the event). Attendees represented program partners (both summer and school-year partners), philanthropy, city/district representatives, and local thought leaders.
Incorporating youth voice into program design constituted the main charge of the day. A new practice brief, based on citywide youth focus groups, was released, and a panel of Boston Public School students helped attendees discuss strategies for incorporating more opportunities for youth leadership, choice, and autonomy into programming. This topic is in response to data trends that show school-year and summer sites struggle in these domains. Practitioners made commitments to incorporate more youth voice into their programming, based on the youth panel and ensuing roundtable discussions.
The final portion of the Summit featured a presentation from Boston Public Schools on its approach to utilizing summer as a 5th quarter of learning.
Summer Learning Community Forum – October 22, 2015
Over 120 attendees participated in the Boston Summer Learning Community Forum on October 22, 2015. Attendees included representatives from current direct-service partner organizations, prospective partner organizations, researchers, funders, school district and city personnel, and other key stakeholders.
The citywide goal, set by Mayor Walsh and BPS Superintendent Chang, of expanding the Summer Learning Community to 100 programs serving 10,000 youth framed the agenda.
Attendees discussed lessons learned from a presentation summarizing data findings across 79 summer program sites. These 79 program sites participated in the Summer Learning Community in summer 2015: tracking student access using a central database, measuring program quality using common validated research tools, and identifying best practices to share with peers.
A panel of local and national thought leaders discussed implications for the findings and strategies for meeting the Mayoral/Superintendent goal.
